On April 2nd, World Autism Awareness Day, We’re Lighting a Red Light to Move from Awareness to Inclusion
Autism, a complex neurodevelopmental difference that is present from birth and typically recognized in the early years of life, was seen in 1 out of every 2,500 children in 1985. Today, according to recent research, 1 in every 36 children is diagnosed with autism.
To draw attention to the existence of autism, Tohum Autism Foundation runs a special campaign on April 2nd—declared by the United Nations as “World Autism Awareness Day”—to help better understand the needs of autistic individuals and promote their equal acceptance in society.
As part of this campaign, which aims to raise public awareness, buildings are illuminated in red, events are organized in collaboration with various institutions to promote knowledge and understanding of autism, and campaign supporters gather under the hashtag #otizmekırmızıışıkyak.
Shifting the Focus from Awareness to Inclusion
Although significant progress has been made in raising awareness about autism worldwide in recent years, autistic individuals continue to face social and environmental barriers in accessing their fundamental rights and freedoms.
For over 20 years, Tohum Autism Foundation has been a leading advocate in Türkiye for integrating autistic children into society through special education. In light of global developments, the Foundation shifted its focus in 2022 from mere awareness to inclusion, through the “Shine a Red Light on Autism” campaign, with the goal of fostering deeper understanding and greater societal acceptance of autistic individuals.
Tohum Autism Foundation highlights that autistic children still face difficulties in accessing quality education, that autistic individuals are not always accepted in workplaces, and that they must struggle to become part of social life—and thus everyday life. The Foundation continues to advocate for equal rights for autistic individuals, with all their differences.
Building an Inclusive and Accessible World Together with Autistic Individuals
This year as well, Tohum Autism Foundation aims to extend the reach of its mission to promote social acceptance of autistic individuals through the “Shine a Red Light on Autism” campaign. Once again, the color of autism will be red. As in previous years, historical and iconic buildings in Istanbul and across Türkiye will be illuminated in red in solidarity with the Foundation. Private sector buildings will also shine red lights to show their support for autistic individuals and say, “We stand with you.”
Calling on everyone to support the campaign, Tohum Autism Foundation General Manager Burçak Karakaya said:
“Today and every day, we move forward with autistic individuals to build an inclusive and accessible world in which their differences are accepted—in homes, schools, workplaces, and all areas of life. We must work harder to ensure autistic friends have access to more inclusive educational opportunities, equal job prospects, and environments where they can express themselves freely and are treated with equal respect.”
