For Equal Rights and Access for Individuals with Autism on April 2nd, World Autism Awareness Day #OtizmeKırmızıIşıkYak

Autism, a complex neurodevelopmental difference that is congenital and typically recognized in the early years of life, was diagnosed in 1 out of every 2,500 children in 1985. Today, that number has risen to 1 in every 36 children. However, individuals with autism continue to face significant barriers to equal access in education, employment, healthcare, and social life.

Tohum Autism Foundation is launching a special campaign on April 2nd, “World Autism Awareness Day,” as declared by the United Nations, to raise awareness and promote greater societal acceptance of individuals with autism. As part of the campaign, buildings will be illuminated in red, informative events will be held, and supporters will unite under the hashtag #LightItUpRedForAutism.

Awareness is Not Enough — An Inclusive Society Matters!

Although public awareness of autism has increased in recent years, individuals with autism still face social and environmental obstacles that hinder their access to fundamental rights and freedoms. For the past 22 years, Tohum Autism Foundation has played a crucial role in helping children with autism integrate into society. Since launching the “Light It Up Red for Autism” campaign in 2022, the Foundation has focused on promoting understanding and acceptance of individuals with autism. It aims to draw attention to the need for inclusive education, workplace acceptance, and social integration — advocating for equal rights for all while shifting the focus from awareness to inclusion.

Turkey Turns Red for Autism!

Answering the call of Tohum Autism Foundation, many iconic and historic buildings across Turkey will once again be illuminated in red this year. Institutions and individuals will show their support for people with autism by joining the campaign on social media using the hashtag #LightItUpRedForAutism.

Burçak Karakaya, General Manager of Tohum Autism Foundation, emphasized the significance of the campaign:
“Together with individuals with autism, we are working toward building an inclusive world where differences are embraced in every aspect of life. We continue our efforts to ensure that individuals with autism have equal opportunities in education, employment, and social life. By raising public awareness about autism, we strive to create a more inclusive world for everyone.”

Show your support on April 2nd by wearing red and sharing your message on social media using the hashtag #LightItUpRedForAutism to raise awareness and stand for equal rights for individuals with autism!
