“With the ”Every Classroom is TOHUM" Project, the 199th Special Education Classroom in Turkey was Renovated!
The TOHUM Autism Foundation added another special education classroom through its “Every Classroom is a TOHUM” project, which aims to support children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in accessing education. The special education classroom at Çakmak Şehit Mahmut Coşkunsu Secondary School in Ümraniye, Istanbul, which was renovated with the support of Anadolu Sigorta, was enriched with educational materials and technological equipment suitable for the children's learning needs.
The opening of the renovated special education classroom took place with the participation of officials from the TOHUM Autism Foundation, Anadolu Sigorta, and the Ümraniye District Directorate of National Education. This classroom became the 3rd special education classroom supported by the TOHUM Autism Foundation in the Ümraniye district and the 58th across Istanbul. Autistic children studying in the classroom will receive their education in this special room designed to suit their needs.

Since 2009, through the “Every Classroom Has a TOHUM” project, special education materials tailored to the individual needs of students have been provided to special education classes, special education practice schools, and special education kindergartens in mainstream schools affiliated with the Ministry of National Education. TOHUM Under the project through which the Autism Foundation has renovated 199 special education classrooms across 42 provinces to date, continuous communication and support are provided to teachers throughout the year thanks to the “teachers network,” which was established to update their knowledge and evaluate their feedback. Following the February 6 earthquakes, support was also provided to 15 special education classrooms in Adana, Adıyaman, Hatay, Kahramanmaraş, and Malatya within the scope of the project.

Autism, a neurodevelopmental difference that is innate and noticed in the first years of life, is seen in 1 out of every 36 children today. The only known cure for autism is an intensive and continuous special education process starting with early diagnosis. This education process plays a critical role not only in supporting the child's development, but also in integrating them into society.
In the development of children with autism, equipping special education classrooms with materials suited to individual needs offers great support in terms of helping children gather their attention, communicate, develop motor skills, and increase social interactions. Enriched educational environments make learning both easier and more enjoyable while helping children unlock their potential.
