On September 21, US President Donald Trump suggested that the use of paracetamol (Tylenol) during pregnancy could increase autism, and announced that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will work on new labelings containing a warning against using this drug. He also recommended that the use of Tylenol during pregnancy be ’limited unless medically necessary.“ In addition to the drug, he claimed that vaccines lead to autism and that the use of leucovorin (folinic acid) is effective in the treatment of autism. Organizations working in the field of autism evaluate these claims as ”not based on scientific evidence“ and ”alarming messages.“ However, the rapid spread of the claims in the media can lead to confusion and anxiety among families.
The use of paracetamol (Tylenol) during pregnancy and autism is linked to small-sample and weak studies. High-quality, large-scale research reveals no relationship between paracetamol during pregnancy and autism. Furthermore, scientific evidence clearly demonstrates that vaccines do not cause autism. The World Health Organization (WHO), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and international studies involving millions of children have reached the same conclusion. Similarly, there are no definitive findings showing a cause-and-effect relationship regarding medications such as leucovorin; clarity on these issues will only be achieved through larger and longer-term research.

Today, the most accurate thing to do is to support the development of children with autism through early diagnosis and scientifically accepted educational programs. Claims without a scientific basis can cause unnecessary anxiety in families and lead to misdirection. Therefore, our call to families is to consult reliable scientific sources rather than speculative rhetoric circulating on social media. The booklets and guides provided by our foundation as open sources, along with the TOHUM Autism Foundation Education Portal, offer up-to-date, scientifically based content for families and teachers.
