Autism Spectrum Disorder

What is Autism?

Autism is a complex neurodevelopmental difference that is congenital and usually noticed in the early years of life.

Individuals with autism may exhibit significant impairments in social skills—such as communicating with others, playing interactive games, and making friends—compared to their peers. Another characteristic of autism is repetitive behaviors, obsessions, and unusual interests. For example, repetitive behaviors like rocking or walking on tiptoes may be observed; these behaviors can increase during moments of intense stress or joy.

Additionally, individuals with autism may insist on the preservation of routines and the stability of their environmental order. Since autism manifests in different levels and combinations in each individual, needs and support plans must be tailored to the person.

Autism is not a single-type profile; communication styles, sensory sensitivities, areas of interest, and daily living skills can vary across a wide spectrum. Therefore, support plans must be designed in an individualized manner.
